The aim of the scholarship is to both challenge and inspire you. There is no specified target or standard of achievement as what is accomplished will depend on your flying ability and any limitations arising from your disability, whether physical or fatigue related.

After you’ve passed the Final Selection Board at RAF Cranwell, and subject to your circumstances, arrangements will be made for you to take your scholarship at a Flying School in either the UK or abroad.

The number of scholarships, and their type, will vary each year as they are dependent on the generosity of sponsors. Those for this year can be seen on the News page.

Flying Schools currently training FSDP scholars in the UK are Aerobility at Blackbushe Airport; Aeros at Wellesbourne; the Bristol Aero Club at Kemble and Shadow Aviation at Old Sarum and overseas at 43 Air School South Africa and at Purdue University in the USA. In all cases accommodation is provided by the Flying School or nearby.

You will be presented with your scholarship certificate at a special ceremony at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) in the July of the year you are awarded your scholarship, and if all goes according to plan you will be invited back to RIAT the following year to be awarded your ‘pilot’s wings’

“Being up in the air and throughout the course it never came to my mind that I was disabled. This experience has made me realise that I can achieve anything that I want to do. I am in control”. 2012 Scholar.
